The plant is a shrub with large leaves and small, pink flowers. Patchouli essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of Patchouli leaves and is orange-brown in color. It has a distinct, earthy aroma and is best known as a regenerating skin care oil. Patchouli is a good adjuvant for acne, dermatitis, eczema, fungal infections, wrinkles and wounds. It also aids digestion, suppresses appetite and relieves nausea. Store in a dry and cool place, away from sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Bath: Add 5 - 10 drops of essential oil to a bath of warm water. If your skin is sensitive, first mix the essential oil into a teaspoon of carrier oil. Close the door so that the steam does not escape. Keep your body in the water for at least 10 minutes and relax by taking deep breaths. For extra hydration, dilute the oils in 10 ml of carrier oil before adding the essential oil to the warm bath. Massage: Add 5 - 6 drops of essential oil to 10 ml of carrier oil. Mix well and apply liberally to the skin by gently massaging. Inhalations: Add 4 - 5 drops of essential oil to a bowl of hot water. Place a towel over your head, close your eyes and lean over the bowl. Inhale the vapors for a few minutes.
