Hemoglobin (Hb, Hgb), the red blood pigment, is a protein found in red blood cells whose job is to transport oxygen in the body. To a small extent, it is also responsible for the transport of nitric oxide and carbon dioxide, and by absorbing hydrogen ions, it helps maintain the body's acid-base balance. It is one of the most important morphological elements of blood.

Hemoglobin is composed of heme (an iron-containing porphyrinic cofactor) and globin (a protein composed of chains of amino acids).
