Description
Melatonin Biofarm 5 mg is an OTC medicine for use as an adjunct in the treatment of sleep-wake rhythm disorders , for example related to time zone changes or shift work. The drug also helps to regulate disturbances in the circadian rhythm of sleep and wakefulness in blind patients .
How does melatonin work?
Melatonin is a natural neurohormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain. It is responsible for regulating the circadian rhythm, i.e. the sleep-wake cycle . Melatonin levels are lowest during the day and highest at night. Its secretion also varies seasonally, depending on the length of the day in different seasons.
Melatonin helps in the treatment of sleep disorders in two ways: it directly facilitates falling asleep and adjusts sleep rhythm to changes in lighting and length of day , through MT1 and MT2 receptors.
