Effects and benefits:
Carnosine (beta-alanyl-L-histidine) is an amino acid composed of the amino acids histidine and beta-alanine.
Protecting brain tissues and functions:
- maintains the normal functions of the cell membrane (ion transport, depolarization, etc.) and the transmission of information between neurons (maintains the activity of the Na-K-ATP-ase enzyme)
- reduces the action of reactive oxygen species on brain membrane lipids (increases the antioxidant activity of superoxide dismutase – SOD)
- reduces the formation of aldehydes, oxygen and nitrogen free radicals resulting from the breakdown of dopamine under the action of the monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) enzyme
